Step into the storied halls of Koldinghus, one of Denmark’s most significant royal castles, now transformed into a world-class museum boasting an award-winning restoration. With its over 750-year-old legacy, Koldinghus invites visitors to explore large international exhibitions and enjoy a unique panoramic view of the city from the Giant Tower. This iconic castle not only showcases a rich tapestry of history but also provides a spectacular venue for cultural activities and dining experiences in the historical Madkælderen.
Koldinghus has stood as a linchpin in Danish history, serving variously as a royal residence, a frontier defense, and a local government seat throughout its more than 750 years. Today, it offers visitors a seamless blend of ancient architecture and modern museum experiences, making it a must-visit destination on any cultural itinerary in Denmark.
Accessibility: Koldinghus is an old royal castle from the 13th century. It was built over several centuries, and after several renovations, there are therefore many stairs and staggered floors. With assistance from the staff, all floors except the Giant Tower and the Prison Cellar are accessible to wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties. There is also a disabled lift down to the Food Cellar. In addition, Koldinghus has four disabled parking spaces, is part of the Sunflower Program, which offers free admission for people with companion cards, and service dogs are welcome. If you have special needs, you are welcome to report your arrival in advance so that the staff can be prepared to help you in the best possible way. You can call the staff on tel. 2381 9520.
Part of the Royal Collection: Koldinghus is part of the Royal Collection, which also has visitor sites at Rosenborg and Amalienborg.
